Irene's life with Arthur

Created by Amanda 12 years ago
Irene met Arthur Charles Clark in 1945 at the Waterloo Tavern, Huddersfield where she worked part time in the evenings. Arthur was in the Royal Signals and was stationed nearby at Kirkburton. The Clark family were from Gloucestershire so they moved to Cheltenham in 1946 and lived in a 3rd floor flat in St Keverns, Christchurch Rd with Phillip. Not long after that, two of Arthur's sons from his first marriage came to live with them. Bill and Ray were aged 7 and 10. Phillip became ill with a burst appendix and sadly died on 12 January 1947 aged 5. Irene took him back to Yorkshire to be buried and while there her daughter Ann Christine Clark was born on 21 February 1947. It was a harsh snowy winter but at Easter when Irene was well enough and the weather had improved she and Ann returned to Cheltenham by train. That summer the family moved to 23 Pennine Road and Irene and Arthur married at the Register Office, Cheltenham on 19 September 1947. Arthur became ill with Tuberculosis in 1948 and was admitted to Standish hospital where he stayed for a year. Even when he was allowed home he couldn't work for another 5 years. Irene worked hard to nurse Arthur and support the family taking waitressing and cleaning jobs when life must have been very hard. Peter Stuart Clark was born on 30 October 1951 and Sandra Elizabeth on 5 April 1958. In 1953 the family got their first car. In September 1958 the family moved to 297 Prestbury Road where Irene lived for the next 53 years. It was Ann's first day at Cleve School. In the 1960s Irene became restaurant manager for Berni Inns in Montpelier in Cheltenham. She later worked for several years at Sketchleys the dry cleaners. She also worked for many years as catering manager at Cheltenham Racecourse and often met and looked after members of the Royal Family including Prince Charles, Princess Diana, the Queen Mother and Princess Anne. When Arthur died in 1987 she was a widow once more and again her life changed.
